Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to reduce the size of large breasts while also making them more symmetrical and proportionate to the rest of the body. It carries the dual benefits of improving your appearance while relieving the physical and emotional burden of overly large size breasts.

When one has very large breasts, it is difficult to exercise, play sports, swim, fit into clothing, or even function on a daily basis without pain. It can lead to back pain and dermatitis. It  can have a negative impact on a woman’s quality of life; breast reduction can correct it and enhance her life.

Are you good candidate for breast reduction?

Following are the common reasons of considering breast reduction:

  • You have backaches, neck aches, or skin irritation under your breasts
  • You have difficulty breathing and notice grooves in your shoulders from your bra straps
  • You have poor posture or numbness in parts of your breasts and upper chest from excessive breasts weight
  • You find it nearly impossible to buy dresses and blouses and difficult to find tops that fit.
  • You are very unhappy with your appearance because of your breast size.
  • You have finished having children and breast-feeding, because this can have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast reduction before having children and feel that they can address any subsequent changes later. If you plan to breast-feed in the future, you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?

There are many benefits associated with breast reduction. The surgery can make the breasts more proportionate to the rest of the body while also relieving a number of problems associated with large breasts, including back and neck pain, shoulder strain, skin irritation and infection, poor posture, shortness of breath, inability to participate in certain sports or recreational activities, difficulty finding clothing that fits, and social or sexual embarrassment.

Will I have noticeable scars?

All surgical incisions result in scars, but we make a point to minimize and conceal them as much as possible. For some breast reductions the incisions are made around the areola and straight down to the breast crease (a short scar breast reduction). In some cases scar will be in the shape of “inverted T”. The nipple/areola complex is lifted higher, and the size of the areola is reduced if necessary while leaving the blood supply to nipple intact.

Are there any risks associated with breast reduction surgery?

There is some degree of risk associated with all types of surgery. Potential complications of breast reduction surgery may include adverse reaction to anesthesia, asymmetry, blood clots, infection, loss of sensation, nerve damage, and scarring. Women may lose the ability to breast feed in some cases.
